Learn the language of deer.

Five practical articles adapted from the supplied transcript of How to Talk to the Deer, featuring Don Laubach and Gordon Eastman. Read a lesson, then use its timestamped video link to hear and see the original demonstration.

LESSON 01 · 8:45–9:43

Start with the common doe call

In How to Talk to the Deer, Don Laubach introduces a common doe sound as a useful starting point for learning the call. His demonstration contrasts a lower, nasal sound with a higher-pitched fawn sound. At 9:26, he partially closes the end of the call to illustrate how the tone changes.

Practice along with the recording rather than judging the sound from memory. Laubach recommends asking another person to listen: what the caller hears can differ from what someone nearby hears. Work on a consistent sound before experimenting with stronger or higher-pitched variations.

LESSON 02 · 16:30–17:12

Understand band tension

Laubach’s setup uses two bands with slightly different tension. In this demonstration, he keeps one looser for the common doe sound and the other tighter for fawn and distress sounds. The lesson is to understand how the setup affects the sound, rather than expecting every adjustment to produce the same result.

At 16:51, he shows the adjustment directly: pulling the band through the back of the call increases its tension. Follow the filmed demonstration and compare the sound after each adjustment. Small changes and repeated listening make it easier to recognize the difference between the two settings.

LESSON 03 · 32:07–32:42

Keep the calling bands dry

The film’s maintenance lesson is simple: moisture on the band can change how the call sounds. Eastman describes saliva building up during use, especially in cold conditions, and shows why a caller may need to pause and dry the band before continuing.

The presenters suggest carrying a small piece of chamois or cloth so it is available when needed. Open the call as demonstrated, remove the moisture, and check the sound again. This is a practical preparation habit for the product demonstration as well as for personal practice: a clear, repeatable sound starts with a working call.

LESSON 04 · 32:42–34:02

Build rhythm before intensity

Laubach recommends beginning with the common doe sound before moving toward more urgent calling. In the film, the presenters describe changing pitch, tempo, and spacing as separate parts of the technique. A louder sound is not presented as the automatic first choice.

For practice, compare a calm sequence with a slightly more urgent one and listen for what actually changes. Give each sequence time, then observe the response rather than immediately repeating at maximum volume. These examples describe the presenters’ field experiences; they do not promise that every deer will approach or react in the same way.

LESSON 05 · 40:22–42:37

Watch the response and the conditions

The film asks viewers to notice more than the call itself. Ear movement, the direction a deer looks, and changes in movement all help tell the story of a filmed response. Eastman also discusses wind and the difficulty deer may have locating the sound in those conditions.

At 40:42, he explicitly notes that stopping a deer is not a guaranteed outcome. Treat the sequences as examples to study, not a fixed prediction. Compare the sound with the animal’s behavior and the surrounding conditions, and keep looking around: later in the same passage, the presenters describe a deer appearing behind the caller.
